Interest in digital nomad visas soared after the 2024 US election, with Americans seeking opportunities to live and work abroad amid uncertainty.
Since the 2024 US presidential election, interest in digital nomad visas and opportunities to live and work abroad has seen a significant rise among Americans.
Google search data shows a sharp increase in searches related to leaving the United States and exploring digital nomad options following the election results. According to an analysis by Centus, terms like "digital nomad visa" experienced a 170% spike in interest during the vote-counting period.
This shift seems to be accelerating existing trends in digital nomadism. A recent survey found that 43% of individuals planning to become digital nomads in 2025 cited the election results as a factor. Additionally, 36% of current digital nomads have decided to extend their stays abroad due to the election outcome.
While official sources have been relatively quiet on this specific trend, some experts have commented on the broader implications. Jen Barnett, founder of Expatsi, a company that helps Americans relocate abroad, stated:
"After the debate with Biden and Trump, our traffic shot up 900%. In the past couple of weeks, as poll numbers flip-flop, demand has absolutely exploded."
The broader digital nomad population is also on the rise. Projections suggest the global number will reach 18.1 million by the end of 2024, compared to 17.3 million in 2023. Host countries are adapting to this shift, with 67 nations now offering dedicated digital nomad visa programs to attract remote workers.
